That's right, folks! Finally all 20 pages are inked! Now, to do the lettering and the SPI stuff. Ah, so this is what accomplishment feels like...

I finally finished the inks on the Rose Red and Snow White graphic short story. I skipped out on doing the different chapter title pages so (and because) it's only twenty pages. I still need to add the heavy inks to some of Snow's hair and some guy's suit, but aside from that: DONE.

I mean finished. Completed. Mission accomplished. There is not another page to ink.

It's a pretty good feeling to have that under my belt. I mean, I still want to add the words and word balloons, but that can be done at work on PhotoShop not necessarily tied to my drawing table. Although, I'm thinking I might want to rescan in everything at 600 dpi before getting into everything, just to make sure it's print quality (in case I want to submit it to somewhere, the files are already at that dpi). But honestly, that's only a small amount of tinkering. It takes me maybe half an hour to slap on borders and balloons and stuff.

What I'm really excited about is, now that I've cleared the deck, I can focus on the Small Press Idol contest. It's a contest to submit and develop an idea for publishing a 4-issue limited series. I've been putting some thought into it, and while I have a lot of interesting ideas, I think the one mostly to be able to consume 96 pages of story is.... DOMESTIC VILLAINY!

What can I say? I'm both excited and terrified at the idea of expanding on the worlds of Dr. Destructo, Dash MacPherson and everyone else. The first step, however, is creating a fabulous, eye-catching, can't-resist-picking-up cover...

CRAP!

Just finished page 3 inks (I plan on doing tones via PhotoShop).

Little Dude is in bed (we watched a chunk of Spider-Man 2 together, YAY).

Listenin' to the ol' "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVDs. I used the first 20 minutes of "Chasing Amy" as a primer. I can really feel for Banky now. Tracer, indeed!

I think I'm gonna chill for a bit before going onto page 4. Page 5 is, I think, when I started to hit my stride with the characters and art, so that'll be fun.

Dropped off the kiddo sans hearing aids.  Ugh.
Crawled beneath the house and cleaned out the furnace air filter.  Double-Ugh.
Finished the inks and scanned in the 2nd page of the comic.
which is here )

I had originally wanted to get a full 24-page comicbook written, pencilled, inked, colored/toned and lettered by the end of January. Dude, that is so not happening. I mean, I've gotten it written and drawn, but be damned if I can ink 20+ pages by midnight tonight. Especially when it's taken me about 4 hours to get page two done. Yikes! But then again, I had some stuff to fill in on page 2 because I decided to take some illustrative "short cuts." More fool I. I will have to note that the more complete my pencils are, the easier my inking will be. In theory.

But hey, even with cleaning the filter for the furnace and demantling and reassembling the water heater pipes (oh, how I loathe thee!), I should probably be into inking the really fun stuff by tonight. Which will ROCK! Or not, but hey, no more freakin' dwarves to ink, eh?

Ugh.

Feel kinda crappy.
Little Dude dumped out the remainder of a baby powder bottle onto his floor (think "A White Christmas" here people).
And I still need to fix the goddamned water heater pipes.

But hey, I got the first page of the comic scanned.
Lookee. )

Boo-yah.

I just finished my last page of sequential art for the comicbook I've been working on.  That's TWENTY PAGES of panelled art and story.  I only have to do 4 title pages and the inking/lettering.  And, if I may be so bold, I'm pretty satisfied with how the last few pages have turned out.

And for those inquiring for a taste of what I've been hammering on and off for the month, here ya go.

Dude!

DUDE!

DUDE!

The twenty-four pages of layouts are now finished! That's right. Finished, baby. Sure, I took a couple short-cuts by using title pages, but only four! And while it's certainly not gonna win any awards, the story has a beginning, a middle and an end. It's got fairy tales and folklore. Good vs. Evil! Guns and smack-downs! It's got magic and wolves and shit! Sure, I gotta finish the pencils of half the pages and ink the whole damned thing, but hey, that's the easy part! It's the writing and layout crap that takes forever (or 25 days, take your pick).

And I gotta say, so far, the drawings ain't half bad.

Well, I finally know how the majority of my comic turns out. I know because I've done another 3 pages of layouts and managed to know who/what's in the last act (and remaining 5 pages). Yeah, I'm kinda taking a cop-out by doing small chapter title pages, but hey, if that's what it takes to get 24 pages done in 31 days, I'll take whatever damned shortcut I can.

And I should have a decent opportunity tonight to get some more layouts and hopefully some finished pencils done tonight, when The Wif goes out a-knittin'. Man, I'm glad I setup Trillian to remind me of that. Technology is awesome.

I've also got an idea for another graphic short story involving Jewish golem mythology borrowing from a neat short story I read a while ago. But first, to finish this one! Just gotta layour 5 more pages, pencil 12 and ink & letter 24.

Easy-peezy, right?

Well, among other things, my mom has now been introduced to the Internets. And apparently likes it. Or at least the computer that I rebuilt and gave her. With the 1000+ pictures of Little Dude on it. She also said that my book made her laugh, so that's all well and good.

Updates: Actually had some creativity today and finished 2 more pages of layouts and even packed in some rough pencils for page three. Page four (laid out but not pencilled) features Rose Red pistol-whipping somebody. Yeah. And I want to write a kids' book for Little Dude. Riiiiiiiiight.

Anywho, maybe once I actually get some more pencils done and can start the inking process I'll be scanning in some stuff. Go Team Me. As it is, I'm probably not going to get 24 finished pages done by the 31st, but I'm gonna need some ideas. Or at least to stop packing 8 panels to a page. Something.

...is just beyond the horizon.

Tonight was an exercise in endurance, what with the 6-hour semi-continuous conference call with 2 support people and about a dozen managers.  Yeah, like that sped anything up, people.  Thankfully everyone agreed to wrap it up shortly after midnight and now, if something breaks, it won't be my problem for potentially FIVE days.  Whee.

Was directed to this site:  http://bleedman.snafu-comics.com/.  Oh the laughter that ensued was greatly needed.

Also, I managed to finally get looks for Snowy and Rose that I was happy with. )

So, in an effort to make sure we're both maintaining some level of creative productivity, The Wif and I have set goals for the month of January. She'll be writing at least a thousand words a day, while I...

Well, my goal is to have 24 pencilled and inked comic pages done by February 1st. I got my story idea from the "Envisioner" randomized plot generator over at Seventh Sanctum. It is, haha, "The story of Snow White envisioned as a western detective tale." Yeah, mull that over for a sec.

Now, I've already done some brain-storming and I have my cast of characters. I also have something of a stripped-down outline for what these 24 pages are going to entail. And tonight, I pencilled (roughs) the first two pages which is the origin/start of the story. I've also got some modifications in mind, but I am already seeing that this is nothing like the Nanowrimo challenge. At least with prose, all you have to do is hit backspace...

*sigh*

I just need to keep telling myself "this is only a test."
