I think it's safe to say that I can pretty much kiss finishing my NaNoWriMo novel good-bye. It just didn't hold me this year. I don't think it was the characters, even if they just didn't appeal to me after a while (I mean, kung fu mistress, unfrozen kid from 1900's with a demon, Des and Thor's daughter? What's not to love?!) nor did the pedestrian descent into Hel/l. Oh well. Maybe it'll play better in graphic novel form, since I'm still totally keyed up from last month's 24-hour Comic Day. I with DeviantART's reproduction rights weren't so buggered up, 'cause I'd love to post it.

Alas, when the money's not so tight, I'll get my own domain and server space again. Mwahaha!

In other news, Little Dude's been croupy and rockin' the sinus drainage. Poor bastard went to bed at 2pm today, after getting up at around 4am this morning. Thankfully, propping him up on some extra pillows and a small evening trip to Target seems to be resetting his inner chronometer. Yes, I said "chronometer."

Caught the most recent episode of "Heroes" seemingly the only show I've watched in the last... er, when did "Carnivale" go off the air? Yeah, since then.

Art-wise, I've been sketching up a storm of various things, both original and fannish. All the fan stuff should be up on DevArt, the original stuff... yeah, refer to the earlier webserver issue.

Well, I've finally broken 10,000 words on my NaNoWriMo novel. It has been a bear, not so much with a lack interest in the characters or the idea, but more that I keep wanting to do the damned thing in a graphic novel format. As a result, I'm pretty sure the whole thing sucks, but it's way too late in the game to start some other retarded novel idea. I can only march forward! Maybe. Hopefully a really good word count day tomorrow will ease off some of the pressure.

Geh.

Stupid words and their stupid stupidness.

Argh.

Well, another November, another mad dash to bang out a 50,000 word novel in thirty days.  Three days in and I'm already about a thousand words behind.  About what I averaged last year, really, though the shift in my sleeping schedule may well spell doom (D-O-O-M!) for my productivity.

Funny thing, though.  It turns out that I'm even more inclined to sketch something out or doodle now that I'm writing again.  Procrastinate?  Me?!  Puh-shaw!

Finally!

Yeah, after the NaNo get-together last night, Ne and the CLA (Crazy Ladies' Auxilary) spent the evening crafting and gutting her craft room while I finished the inkwash on the cover of my soon-to-be self-published (in other words vanity printed) novel.

Domestic Villainy )

All in all, I don't think it turned out so bad, ya know?

Drawings!

While I had initially planned to have ye olde novel littered with illustrations, for the sake of getting it actually made, I've decided to forego that plan. But that didn't stop me from starting! As it is, I've got about five illustrations already embedded into the PDF file, so that leaves my remaining time for working on the cover!

Wanna peek? I know you do... )

Why yes, these were initially just sketches in my sketchbook that I then inked and pseudo-touched up in Photoshop! Hopefully I can get the cover to look half-way decent and can then work (maybe) on more illustrations! Or go crazy, because DAMN! look at all these exclamation points!

Well, the whole NaNoWriMo thing is over and there's going to a big get-together on Saturday. I, as such, will probably not be attending so that A) I can spend some Quality Time with Little Dude and B) so The Wife can go because she's a much more social person than I am anyway.

In cool news, I finished the layout and pencils for the cover of The Novel. It's a little incongruous, but I like it. Unfortunately, I'd prefer to have something more stately (i.e. painted) and have been slogging through watercolor tutorials for the past two hours. So, I will probably A) just not do that or B) scan it and attempt to color it with the backup plan being coloring on the PC. Dunno which yet. I'm leaning toward inking it and then going in adding a few notes of color.

Ne and I have also agreed to be Reading Club Buddies (4EVAR!) and are simultaneously reading copies of The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene. I, however, am also reading Scott Pilgrim trades by Bryan Lee O'Malley. It is a strange mix.

What I've found to be interesting is that after carving out the time to write a novel in a month, I have all this free time and creative habits that I had not fully realized. Hopefully I can channel all this into a GRAPHIC NOVEL! That would be totally sweet.

Getting my novel up to speed? Hell-fuckin'-check, baby!

That's right, people, the ol' Novel is now up to 42,000 words. Meaning I'm about 8K away from the finish line. And the way things are coming to together, I should be able to wrap up right around the 50,000 word mark. And if I'm a little under, I've got plenty of filler lined up with which to pad the novel.

Also been looking http://www.lulu.com/ 's prices and formatting options. While the Wif may want to get out a book within the 30-day limit, I'd like to finish the novel. Maybe do a bit of tightening up on it and add some black and white illustrations. Kinda like some of the better Hellboy novels. I think that'd be fun and cool.

Or maybe I'm just still high from pumping out four THOUSAND words last night to get caught up. Either way, it needs pondering.

But first I'll actually wrap up the goddamned thing and then I'll worry about presentation.

Dude! I've almost written a NOVEL! How fucking cool is that?
doc_destructo: (Default)
Why does it feel like I've had the crap kicked out of me?

Sure, I got past my 35,000 word threshold this morning, but goddamn am I tired. I could sleep right now. I really, really don't want to go to the doctor. I'm seriously thinking about skipping it, maybe sleeping in the truck or some shit. But unfortunately, I'm RESPONSIBLE. Goddamn fuck fuck fuck.

So tired. But hey, at least I've managed to setup the Third Act of the novel to run on fuckin' rails, right? That's gotta count for something. Maybe.
doc_destructo: (Default)
wearing me the fuck out. I mean, I started out okay. Even had a really good weekend there last week and burned some rubber. Now, I've just hit my Third Act and I'm floundering. I'm tired of it and just want to be done with it. I think it has some good moments in it, but the more I think about it, the more I think that everything from this past week is crap.

Giant mounds of crap.

Which, is why I need to finish this thing as fast as possible. I just need 17,000 more words and I can slam it shut and not deal with it for a while. But I'm constantly torn between just writing more crappy words and trying to shape it up into something to pursue and tweak later on (largely as a graphic project).

Oh why must I be such a tortured artist?!

...

Okay, I'm done whining for right now. It's just not fair that The Wif is ALREADY DONE WITH HER FRIGGIN NOVEL and I'm still struggling! No fair! Wah! WAH!

;-)

Okay, NOW I'm done. I'll just need to sit down tomorrow night and this weekend and really hammer it out. IT SHALL BE DONE!
doc_destructo: (Default)
Man, it'd been a while since I had a really busy day at work. I had almost forgotten what it was like. Add onto that the need to get in some word count to my novel. Thankfully there was enough of a lull for me to get up to 25000 words this morning.

The past couple days have been kinda rough since I *used* to write while Little Dude slept and The Wif went out. Now that Little Dude's decided to be a butt-munch about going to sleep and staying there, Monday and Tuesday netted only token efforts. At least I kept from getting too far behind. Still about a day or two behind (depending on whether I'm working or not). I work the night of the 30th, so hopefully I'll be able to make a big push that night to finish up with minimal interference.

In other news, I've been looking at a ton of pinup and cheesecake artists online. This is largely a response to seeing some of Terry Dodson's pencil work in "The Art of Comic Book Inking". Interesting and fun stuff to keep in mind when I go to do the visual component of me old novel. Can I help it if I keep thinking of this thing as a future graphic novel?
doc_destructo: (Default)
Man, it was really tough getting my word count in tonight. There wasn't a whole lot going on at work, but there were some periodic interruptions. I mostly started head-butting against my plot. I've had to constantly work to put off starting my third act with the "ticking timebomb" (i.e. that things need to wrap up soon because the protagonists are on the clock).

As it is, I think I've started to depart from the humorous short scenes that started the novel and I just know I've finally indulged in one of the standard writing cliches for exposition. Or something. I just feel a little disappointed with things right now and am starting to have doubts about my big "twist" and stuff. Maybe I just need to have some time off from the novel tonight and get some drawing done instead. Or maybe I'm just spiraling into mediocrity! Oh no!

Oh well, still keeping up with word count at least.

Yeesh

Work sucks.

Well, for getting any writing done, it does. I just can't concentrate and crawl into my headspace here. Admittedly this is the Week Two "Hump" so maybe it's just that I've finally gotten to real meat of my plot that I'm now starting to have doubts/worries/fears/problems.

But hey, I finished today with over TEN THOUSAND words, so I feel really good about it, even it turns into a meandering, brooding mess. Which I hope it does, because as much as I want to try not to have my hopes too high, there's a lot of stuff here that'd I'd love to illustrate and transform into a graphic novel. Hell, I could probably have another 4 or 5K words if I didn't think so much in my graphic novel/comicbook shorthand.

Anyways, I'm pretty nervous since now I'm getting to a point where I'll have to focus on another character for the most part and I'm not sure I'll do her justice. Oh well, nothing for it but to plunge head long into it... and try and get in six thousand words in the next 2 evenings. OY!

...to stay away from my Novel at work, it seems.

So much so that I've decided to do a shitload of website stuff rather than face those demanding words.  Hopefully tonight I'll have all of the Wif's 24-hour Comic (which was so much more kickass than mine and mine had Zombie Harlots!), the complete French translation to my little doujinshi project (whoa) and of course, a nice picture of your good friends and mine

Mr. Fluffy and Dr. Bearbear )

This novel business is hard stuff. Especially since my brain wants to start drawing every quasi-brilliant idea that pops into my head. And trust me, since I started, I've had like 20 billion ideas for drawings on everything from Batman to Fluffy and Bearbear to new, crazy stuff.

Yeesh!

I'm gonna stop for a minute and rest up. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up with my expected word count later tonight. I'm at 4029 word right now and need about 7000 by tonight. Shame I still have NO IDEA WHERE TO GO with this thing. But that's the joy and hurt of it, ne?

Anyway, going to interact with my son for a bit and hopefully catch the 2-hour block of Avatar later this afternoon. What can I say? I likes the kung fu!

And for those still keeping up with this thing, here's a treat from my "latest" novel. ^_^

Chapter Whatever )

Am I fuckin' weird or what? This is why I have no friends.

So, didn't get a whole lot more done after my initial run this morning, but I did meet my goal and was lucky to get a little veg time in. Write now I've got a lot of characters floating around competing for pagespace, but not a whole lot of ideas with what to do with them. Though I suspect I will probably be reaching into my bag of tricks from the 24 Hour Comic and be pulling some shit out of my ass.

Can you say, "Zombie Harlots?" I knew you could!
doc_destructo: (Default)
What started out as Cayden getting up at an obscene hour and demanding to be put back to bed has turned into a nice jump start for me to start the NANOWRIMO! As you can see with the Calendar above, I've already got over 1000 words, so I'm 1/50th of the way there! Whoo-hoo! Hopefully this will allow me to have a bunch of ideas I've been pondering over the last couple years to dovetail nicely into each other and result in a giant fun mess. Yes, I said MESS!

Mwuhahahahah!

Catch me if you can, suckers!
