Graduation

doc_destructoOn Friday, I attended my youngest brother's high school graduation.
This wasn't so bad in and of itself. I didn't mind that they kept almost all the lights off until the hat-throwing bit. Or the trite little class valedictorian and salutatorian speeches that sounded almost exactly like every speech given in an eighties college movie. It was even nice to finally see all my brothers, even if the one who doesn't really know if he's my brother or not though not for lack of explanation.
Ah, fond remembrance.

No, what bothered me was having to deal with certain members of my extended family whom I was not at all sorry to have not seen in years. There is, after all, only so much discussion of pubic hair I care to listen to, particularly in a high school gym with people I was happy never seeing again in my lifetime. Yet another bonus to living in Lexington. That and my sister-in-law was mood-swinging like crazy... and I really don't think it's the pregnancy that's making her nuts, especially when she was rather jealous to begin with. Yeesh. Though hey, my son's got something like 5 inches on her kid, who's older! It's petty and juvenile but it makes me happy. Hush you!
My youngest brother also started work at the same warehouse as my other brother (god I feel like a Newhart character...), and is planning on enrolling in local community college courses. Oh sure, that enticing lure of $8.50 an hour is hard to pass up, but I think I've made an impression that he probably doesn't want to do that for the rest of his life.
Of course attending a high school graduation reminded me of my own 10 year reunion this summer... that I'm certain isn't happening because my class prez is probably busy detoxing. At least I hope she is. Not that there were all that many people in high school I cared to keep tabs on, nor was I very subtle in letting them know. The people I'm still in touch with in some degree are pretty much it.
