Fun fun fun!

Well, tonight's been fraught with exhaustion, a little busywork and
some entertainment. But overall, it's been a good evening.
Found some fun random story/idea generators to play for idea
fodder. Also found out I still have 9 and a half days of vacation
left. DAMN. I was sure I'd been out more. Probably
because I haven't kept track of all the times I've come in late and
stuff. But still, gonna be off Christmas Day til the end of the
year and still have enough leftover for a week off for each remaining
month of the year. Selling out to the Man is sweet.
Got a little bit more drawing done tonight, though nothing nearly as intensive as this past weekend. Mostly more of the strip stuff. A little doodling. I'm hoping the random generator stuff will prompt some fun sketch ideas.
Been reading the first volume of Essential Spider-Man, which contains all the first comics from the 60's in black & white on newsprint. Funny, but with the exception of the occassional outdated pop culture reference ("Who am I, Fats Domino?" for example... heh heh) and the almost absurd pseudo-science (60's = RADIATION!, today = nanomachines!) you don't notice it's FORTY YEARS OLD. I mean, people are still bastards, life is still unfair, and dammit, doing the right thing almost always comes with a price. The only real differences are hair styles and lab equipment.
The big thing though is that I've had so much fun reading it. There's melodrama, there's cheese, there's sheer idiocy on occassion, but each issue is fun. I know what Peter Parker's life is like these days, but it's still a hoot to watch all these first fights (and a couple second fights), the completely different and excited storytelling (really, when was the last time you read something where the writer essentially says, "Listen, let's just get to the cool part" and skips potentially draggy introduction and setup), and simple but excellent artwork.
Admittedly, the somewhat overwrought drama of Webhead's love-life gets a little thick at times, but hey, it's Spider-Man!
